Dr. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters

This bottle of Dr. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters was recovered from Sonoma SHP excavations; there were, however, 30 others like it recovered in Old Sacramento SHP. Started in Pittsburgh in 1853 by David Hostetter, this product was very popular and sold for over a century as Dr. Hostetter's Celebrated Stomach Bitters, and was purportedly based on a prescription dispensed by Hostetter's father, Dr. Jacob Hostetter. This example is made from dark amber glass with a sloping-collar finish. Embossed on one face is "DR. HOSTETTER'S/STOMACH BITTERS."
