---Due to concern over Confederate sympathizers and the potential for a Confederate or foreign naval attack on vital Union shipping lanes, the U.S. Army began fortifying this strategic location in 1863.  Civil War-era Union fortifications and artillery on the island would be established at Camp Reynolds, Point Stewart, Point Knox, and Point Blunt. The 1863 Officers quarters at Camp Reynolds, among the first buildings on the island, can still be visited at the park.
