---Ulysses S. Grant, the future U.S. President and commander of all Union forces during the Civil War, was stationed here as Captain of Company F, 4th Infantry, in 1853-1854.  Grant, who had been drinking due to extreme boredom, was forced to resign from the Army due to the charge of drunkenness by a superior officer with whom Grant had many quarrels with.
