El Capitán State Beach

NOTICE (March 26, 2020) – State Parks has taken temporary safety measures to reduce crowds and help prevent the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus). This park is closed to vehicular traffic. All museums and visitor centers, and campgrounds in the state parks system are closed until further notice. Events have also been cancelled. As of today, non-campground outdoor areas of parks, including trails and beaches, remain open. Restrooms also remain open, and visitors are advised to take soap for hand washing and alcohol-based hand sanitizers when water is not available.

Everyone has the responsibility to "Flatten the COVID-19 Curve at Parks" by maintaining a social distance of 6 ft. or more when recreating in the outdoors, and staying home if they are sick. If visitors cannot maintain social distancing, they need to leave the park.

California State Parks today announced it is temporarily closing vehicle access to 59 additional state parks and beaches including El Capitan State Beach to avoid dangerous visitation surges and help prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). This brings the total number of state-operated parks and beaches closed to vehicle access to 98. A list of closures can be found online at www.parks.ca.gov/FlattenTheCurve

Driving Directions to El Capitán SB

The beach is located off Hwy 101 seventeen miles west of Santa Barbara. From Hwy 101 north- or southbound, take Exit 117 for El Capitán State Beach. Proceed south toward the ocean and the park entrance.

Camping and Lodging

Visitors will be able to reserve campsites and lodging six months in advance from the current date. Bookings may extend from the arrival date to the desired departure date – based on availability and the park’s maximum stay rules.

El Capitán State Beach offers visitors a sandy beach, rocky tidepools, and stands of sycamore and oaks along El Capitán Creek. It’s a perfect setting for swimming, fishing, surfing, picnicking and camping. A stairway provides access from the bluffs to the beach area.


Beach wheelchairs are available for use by the public with no cost. With this specially designed chair, wheelchair users may access the beach at several locations. Contact a ranger or lifeguard for additional information.

RV rental policy
