San Onofre Surf Beach Parking and Access – Updated 10/29/2026

California State Parks is advising visitors that parking will be limited at San Onofre Surf Beach through the fall and winter as the lower dirt parking lots remain closed in response to ongoing coastal erosion risks. Surf Beach remains open to surfers, pedestrians and bicyclists. The small upper paved parking lot remains open to vehicles; however, parking is limited and wait times may be significant. Visitors are encouraged to park at the nearby Trails area and bicycle to Surf Beach.

Due to significant coastal erosion from recent high surf, elevated tides and Kelvin wave activity, combined with the potential for additional impacts from forecasted El Niño conditions, the lower parking areas remain highly vulnerable to further damage. State Parks will continue monitoring coastal conditions throughout the winter and reassess the lower parking areas in the spring.

State Parks' immediate priorities remain public safety, preserving pedestrian and bicycle access, and maintaining essential emergency vehicle access for lifeguard, rescue and medical services. In the meantime, State Parks is working collaboratively with Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, community groups and stakeholders to explore alternative access and parking areas, as well as longer-term solutions to address coastal erosion and protect public access.

Restroom 1, located at the bottom of the hill in the northernmost portion of the lower dirt parking area, has reopened. Restroom 1 is currently the only operational restroom facility at Surf Beach.

State Parks appreciates the public's patience and understanding as we work to preserve safe recreational access to San Onofre Surf Beach while addressing ongoing coastal challenges.
